About
Defined by one of the oldest dictionaries of our actual history, the Samuel's Johnson's Dictonary of the English Language (1785), a day is referred as "the time from noon to noon, or from midnight to midnight, called the natural day."
In this wonderful program the Amsterdam Music Collective is offering, we explore the different parts of the day as some great composers did understand them and wrote their own vision of it.
We shall break the ice with an "Aubade". This particular music piece is generally regarded as a love song, sung in the morning as lovers part. It can also be considered a song or instrumental composition concerning, accompanying, or evoking daybreak. Followed up by Kodály's "Intermezzo", in a simple A-B-A form, the five-minute work has the character of a relaxed serenade. This intermezzo is the perfect introduction for the next two pieces of the program: the relaxed feeling of its music is giving the hint of Dohnányi's serenade in C major and in the words of an anonymous English writer, “the Intermezzo sounds rather like Dvorák with a slight Hungarian accent.” which reveals the sound scape of the last piece in our program, A. Dvořák's string quintet op. 77 in G major.
